Digital Time-Based Art

ART 253 Digital Art (71338) + ART 265 Motion Design (74147)

Fall 2025(8/11/25 - 12/12/25)
Monday/Wednesday, 9:30–11:50 AM

Beginning Fall 2025, ART 253 Digital Art and ART 265 Motion Design will be combined for the first time into an exciting new course: Digital Time-Based Art. This combined offering emphasizes an artistic approach to digital media, with a particular focus on video art, animation, experimental AI storytelling, and digital imaging. Students may take either CRN to fulfill their class credit requirements. (ART 253 is an elective in studio art, and ART 265 is an elective in graphic design.)

Designed especially for students from traditional studio art disciplines, this class provides a valuable opportunity to expand your portfolio through expressive digital, AI and time-based art projects.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Experiment with digital imagery to complement traditional art practices
  • Full range exploration of digital tools, such as vector, pixel, time-based, and AI/AR.
  • Create compelling video art and digital narratives
  • AI in art production, AI voiceover and AI video.
  • Explore animation fundamentals and motion as an artistic medium
  • Develop a sophisticated artistic portfolio that integrates time and motion

For Students Seeking a Design-Focused Experience:

Students more interested in the graphic design and interactive aspects of motion design—such as UX/UI, branding, and commercial applications—are encouraged to enroll in Motion Graphic Design (CRN: 75669), held on Tuesday/Thursday from 9:30–11:50 AM. While similarly named, Tuesday Thursday Motion Graphic Design offers specialized preparation for graphic design and UX careers, distinctly separate from the art-driven content of the Monday and Wednesday classes.

Make It a Full Day of Immersive Digital Practice

Students looking to accelerate their readiness for the digital art and design industry are encouraged to stay for the afternoon block in Room 7138, by adding:

  • ART 266: Graphic Design I (71345, M.W.) or
  • ART 267: Graphic Design Portfolio Development (75449, M.W.)

These courses run from 12:00 PM to 2:20 PM, extending your creative day with an intensive, hands-on lab experience that mimics industry workflow. This afternoon extension gives you two additional hours of focused design practice, helping you build a strong, career-ready portfolio with minimal extra time investment. You’ll gain real-world preparation in digital tools, branding systems, and personal portfolio development—all in the same studio, under guided mentorship.

We designed these immersive, project-based classes options to give students the time and space needed to develop real-world skills and produce higher-quality work. In today’s competitive industry, having a strong portfolio filled with practical experience is more valuable than ever. Employers are looking for designers who can handle complex projects, think independently, and adapt to a variety of creative challenges. By extending class offering and focusing on intensive, hands-on learning, students gain more than just technical skills—they build confidence, problem-solving abilities, and a professional mindset.

Our approach goes beyond traditional graphic design. We prepare students to be versatile, AI future-ready creatives who can deliver complete design solutions, from branding and motion graphics to web, social media, and UX design. With a focus on real-world challenges and personalized portfolio development, students leave the program equipped to meet industry demands—whether they join a company, work freelance, or operate as a one-person design studio for own business or social channel. This structure ensures that every hour spent in class directly contributes to building a career-ready portfolio and developing the experience employers are looking for.

Class Schedule:

  • Days: Monday & Wednesday
